Power cuts and battery backup for a desk setup

In places with unreliable electricity, a power cut at the wrong time can leave positions open with no way to manage them. A cheap UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, keeps the computer and router alive for 10 to 30 minutes.

The router and modem matter as much as the computer. A laptop with a charged battery keeps running, but without the router the connection dies immediately. Plugging the router and modem into the UPS closes that gap.

Fibre terminals and street cabinets can lose power too, which no home UPS can solve. In those cases, a mobile network backup is the only fix.

Some traders run all entries from a VPS and only use a phone for monitoring, which sidesteps the entire problem. Stops on the server further reduce the damage when everything fails at once.

Knowing how long the backup lasts and testing it by unplugging the mains is worth doing once. Batteries age, and a UPS that lasted 20 minutes two years ago may last five now.

How long does your backup keep the setup running, and when was it last tested?
