Quote update rate is a better activity gauge than candle volume

Counting ticks per bar is the standard approach, but a finer view looks at how quickly quotes arrive in the seconds around a setup. Updates per second behaves like a pulse for the market.

A calm stretch might show 1 to 3 updates a second on a major. Before a release or during a sweep, that can jump past 10. When it spikes without a matching price move, it often means large orders are being absorbed, and when price runs on a low update rate, the move tends to be thin and fragile.

Capturing it needs a simple script that timestamps incoming ticks and calculates a rolling rate. Some platforms already expose tick data that can be processed offline, which allows testing before building anything live.

The practical use is as a go or no-go gauge. A setup with a decent signal but a dead update rate usually underperforms the same setup during a lively stretch.

Update rates also differ across brokers, so thresholds need calibrating on the specific feed being used.

Is the update rate tracked in any form, and which threshold works as a useful filter?
