Pullback entries on micro structure and the cost of waiting

Instead of entering on the breakout, waiting for a small pullback to the broken level offers a better price and a tighter stop. The risk to reward improves noticeably.

The downside is missed trades. Many strong moves never pull back, and waiting means watching them leave. The win rate on pullback entries may be higher, but the number of trades is lower.

The expected value depends on the balance. A test comparing breakout entries with pullback entries on the same signals shows which has the higher expectancy after costs.

Defining the pullback clearly avoids subjectivity. Examples include retracement to a set fraction of the breakout candle, or a return to a short moving average.

A time limit adds discipline. If no pullback occurs within a set number of bars, the trade is skipped.

Comparing both styles over at least a couple of hundred signals is what turns a preference into an actual answer, since small samples flatter whichever style happened to catch the lucky streak.

Which entry style gives better results, and how is the pullback defined?
