Trading through an earnings week for US stocks: does forex care?

Large US companies report earnings in clusters, and the results can move equity indexes. Currency traders sometimes ignore these events. They should not always do so.

In risk-sensitive pairs, a sharp equity move triggered by a major tech earnings report can ripple into AUDUSD, USDJPY and USDCAD. The effect is stronger when the earnings change sentiment about the economy, not just one company.

Bank earnings, in particular, shed light on credit conditions and sometimes on dollar funding.

Companies with big overseas operations often comment on currency effects in their guidance, and large changes can feed discussion about the dollar.

For scalpers, the impact is moderate and indirect. A glance at equity futures during earnings week adds context to otherwise unexplained moves in risk pairs.

A calendar with the biggest reporting days, kept next to the economic calendar, adds a small but useful layer.

Has an earnings release ever explained an unexpected move in a currency pair here?

Yes, a couple of times. The clearest example for me was a big tech earnings night where Nasdaq futures dropped sharply after hours, and USDJPY slid nearly forty pips during the Asian session with nothing on the economic calendar. I spent ten minutes searching for news on the yen before I thought to look at the equity futures.

Since then I keep the S&P and Nasdaq futures on a small watchlist during earnings season. Most of the time they don't matter for my trades, but when a risk pair starts moving without a reason, a quick look usually explains it. AUDJPY in particular reacts to a big equity move more than any pair I trade.

Bank earnings I find less useful for short-term trading, though I agree they're worth reading for background. The practical change for me was just awareness. If one of the very large companies reports that evening, I avoid holding a yen cross overnight, because I've seen the futures gap move it more than any data release that week.
