CADJPY and the double sensitivity

CADJPY moves with risk sentiment, oil, and rate differentials. When oil rallies and stocks rise, it climbs. When both fall, it drops hard.

It's one of the cleaner trend vehicles among the yen crosses, since the two currencies often move in the same direction in response to global conditions. Many scalpers find that breakouts on CADJPY follow through better than on EURJPY.

Spreads are moderate, around 1.5 to 2.5 pips. Liquidity is decent during North American and Asian hours, thinner in Europe.

The weakness is that it needs a clear driver. In quiet markets, it drifts in a stubborn range. When oil and stocks are going in opposite directions, the pair gets pulled both ways and produces false breaks.

A good habit is looking at crude oil and an equity index next to the chart. If both point the same way, a CADJPY move tends to have legs. If they diverge, the signal is weaker.

Does the oil-plus-stocks alignment help filter CADJPY entries on the charts here?

I traded CADJPY through most of the oil rally a couple of years ago, and the alignment filter is pretty much the only reason I kept doing it. When WTI and the S&P futures were both climbing, breakouts above the Asian high on M5 held surprisingly well, often running thirty or forty pips by the US open. When they disagreed, the same breakouts reversed so often that I stopped taking them altogether.

The thing I would add is timing. Oil is most useful as a filter after the inventory report on Wednesday and during the US morning, when crude itself is liquid. In the Asian session the pair seems to follow the Nikkei and general yen flows far more than oil, so I look at USDJPY there instead.

On spreads, my broker shows it around 1.8 pips in the London morning but closer to 3 during the late US afternoon and much wider at rollover. I avoid scalping it in Europe for that reason and only hold it when I expect at least four or five times the spread.

CAD/JPY combines two currencies with distinct drivers. The Canadian dollar is sensitive to oil prices, since Canada is a major oil exporter, while the yen is sensitive to global risk sentiment, often strengthening when markets fall. When oil falls and risk sentiment weakens at the same time, CAD/JPY can drop sharply, with both legs moving against the pair. When oil rises and risk appetite improves, the pair can rally strongly. That double sensitivity makes CAD/JPY a useful gauge of combined commodity and risk moves, but also more volatile than either leg alone.
