When life leaks into the entries
A difficult phone call. A money worry. A sleepless night. None of it has anything to do with the market, and all of it shows up in the trades.
Stress narrows attention and shortens patience. Entries come faster, with less checking. Exits get impulsive. Rules that are easy to follow on a calm day become hard to remember.
Many traders can't tell when it's happening. The market feels the same, but their reactions aren't.
Some develop a pre-session check: a short rating of mood, sleep, and stress, on a scale of one to five. Low scores trigger a rule: reduced size, fewer trades, or none at all.
Over time, the log of ratings and results reveals the relationship. Often, the worst days cluster around the lowest scores, and the correlation is stronger than any market factor.
Skipping a session is cheap compared with the loss that a distracted trader can generate in twenty minutes.
Respecting that doesn't mean being fragile. It means recognizing that the trading system includes the person operating it.
Mood versus results: what does the pattern look like in the journal?
