How oil inventory data moves the Canadian dollar

The weekly crude oil inventory report from the US Energy Information Administration lands on Wednesday mornings at 10:30am New York time. It shows whether stockpiles grew or shrank, and oil prices often jump on a surprise.

The Canadian dollar tends to follow oil, since petroleum is a leading export. USDCAD can twitch within seconds of the release, usually moving opposite to crude. The relationship is not constant, and at times other drivers such as interest rate differentials dominate.

For scalpers, the release is a compact, predictable event with defined timing. Spreads on USDCAD widen briefly, and the first move sometimes reverses.

The correlation is also a useful sanity check. If crude rallies 2 percent and USDCAD does nothing, other forces are in control, and any oil-based reasoning should be set aside.

A habit worth building is to keep a small oil chart open next to CAD pairs, to tell at a glance whether the commodity link is active.

Does anyone here trade USDCAD around oil data, and has the reaction stayed consistent?
