what is a 20 MA on the 1 minute chart even measuring?

Strip the jargon. A 20-period simple moving average on a 1-minute chart is the average of the last 20 one-minute closes. Twenty minutes of price squashed into one number.

Because it averages, it lags. Roughly, a simple average trails price by about half its length, so a 20 MA on 1 minute describes where price was around ten minutes ago. A rising slope just says recent closes are higher than the closes twenty bars back.

It isn't a level the market "respects" on its own. When price bounces off it, that's either coincidence or lots of traders watching the same line.

A shorter period hugs price and whipsaws. A longer one is slower to turn. Neither adds information that wasn't already in the closes. It's a tidy summary, not a forecast.

That doesn't make it useless as a trend filter or pullback reference, just worth knowing what the line is.

Which settings do you use on the 1-minute chart, and do you read the slope, the distance from price, or the crosses?
