ECN is a marketing word before it is a description
Plenty of brokers call their accounts "ECN". The label implies direct access to a network where orders meet other orders. The reality ranges from true to decorative.
A genuine ECN-style setup routes client orders to a pool of liquidity providers, charges a commission, and passes through raw spreads. Many brokers use the label for accounts that have a commission and tight spreads but still route the orders internally.
There is no regulatory definition of the term in retail forex. Any account with a commission structure can wear it.
What to look at instead:
- Whether the broker discloses its liquidity providers
- How execution statistics are published, and by whom
- Whether slippage appears in both directions
- Whether the broker has a history of last look or order rejections on winning trades
A good test is to run the same strategy on an "ECN" account and on a plain standard account at the same broker. If the fills look identical in the cost profile, the label did nothing.
How much did the "ECN" label change the measured execution quality compared with the standard account?
