USDCAD settles on a different day

Most currency pairs settle two business days after the trade. USDCAD settles one. This affects the swap calculation and the timing of triple swap days.

For most pairs, the Wednesday rollover carries triple swap because the settlement date jumps over the weekend. For USDCAD, the triple swap usually lands on Thursday, since the settlement is shifted by a day.

The difference confuses people who assume all pairs follow the same rhythm. A position held through Wednesday on USDCAD would not be charged triple, while one held through Thursday would.

Holidays complicate things. Settlement depends on business days in both currencies' countries, so a Canadian or US holiday changes the swap pattern for that week.

For scalpers who rarely hold overnight, the issue is minor. Accidental carries are the risk. A position left open by mistake costs a different amount depending on the day.

Checking the broker's swap table for each pair shows which day carries the triple charge.

Which pairs in the swap table have the triple charge on a day other than Wednesday?

The weekly US crude oil inventory report from the EIA usually lands on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 New York time. Oil reacts instantly, and USDCAD often follows.

The relationship is imperfect. Sometimes the Canadian dollar shrugs off a big oil move, and sometimes it spikes on a minor inventory surprise. The reaction is fastest when oil is the dominant driver of the market and weakest when interest rates or broader risk sentiment are in charge.

For a short-term trader, the timing matters. The spreads on USDCAD tend to widen slightly just before the release, and the first few seconds after the number appear can produce sharp, erratic ticks. Algorithmic reaction to headline figures often differs from the later reaction as traders parse the details, such as crude stocks versus gasoline and distillates.

A simple observation exercise: mark each Wednesday release on a USDCAD chart over a quarter and see whether the five-minute move has any consistent direction relative to the oil reaction.

For most traders the answer will be that the move exists but the follow-through is unreliable.

What does USDCAD usually do in the five minutes after the inventory report?
