Broker maintenance windows have a schedule, sometimes

Servers need updates. Brokers schedule maintenance, often on weekends. Some also do short restarts in the middle of the week, usually at quiet hours.

For scalpers, a midweek restart at 22:00 GMT is easily missed. The platform disconnects for a few minutes. Open positions stay safe, but any management through the terminal stops.

Announcements usually appear on the broker's website or in the platform's message tab. Many traders never look.

A habit that helps is subscribing to the broker's status notifications. Another is checking the message tab at the start of each session.

Unscheduled maintenance is a different matter. Brokers sometimes patch servers on short notice. The best defence is to avoid holding positions through quiet hours when such work is likely.

Another detail is what happens to the quote stream during short restarts. Some platforms keep showing the last price while disconnected, and the chart simply stops moving. A glance at the connection indicator in the corner, or a clock that keeps ticking independently, tells whether the market is quiet or the feed has dropped.

How did the broker handle the last maintenance window, and was there any notice beforehand?
