central bank blackout periods and the quiet week before a decision

Before big policy meetings, officials usually stop speaking publicly for several days. These are blackout periods, and they make the week before a decision strangely quiet. No speeches, no interviews, no off-hand comments that move a currency.

The pattern is a known one. Volatility often sits low, ranges compress, and then the meeting day wakes everything up. The quiet also removes one of the usual sources of noise, which means price leans more on data and positioning than on headlines.

That cuts two ways for scalpers. Tight, orderly ranges can suit mean-reversion trades, with fewer surprise spikes to knock out a stop. But the calm can also lull a position into staying open longer than it should, right as the decision approaches.

Exact blackout lengths vary by central bank, so the calendar is worth checking rather than assuming. Some banks start it a week out, others a few days.

Is the quiet week before a central bank meeting a good time for scalping on your pairs, or does the calm just trap range traders into the breakout?
