central bank week and the quiet that fools everyone

Nothing irritates quite like the Monday-to-Wednesday grind before a rate decision. Ranges shrink, candles go small, and everyone decides the market is "coiling". Then breakouts get taken, one after another, and each one fails.

Gripe number one: that quiet isn't a signal. Desks trim risk ahead of the event, market makers hold less inventory, and participants simply wait. Thin and drifty is the default. Breakouts from it fail more often because nobody has a reason to push price anywhere yet.

Gripe number two: raising size because the range is tight and the stop can be tiny. A 3-pip stop inside a 5-pip range is one spread widening away from a loss at the worst moment. On the decision minute the spread can multiply several times, depending on the feed.

Quiet days suit smaller targets and patience, not hero trades. The real move tends to arrive when the statement drops, and by then half the people who "saw it coming" are already stopped out.

How do you handle the days before a rate decision: cut size, stay flat until the statement, or trade the usual way?
