spreads right after the new york close, anyone track this?

Around 17:00 New York time, which is 22:00 GMT or 23:00 WAT in winter, the spread on EUR/USD can jump from 0.1 to 0.3 up to 1.0 or more, depending on the account and the feed. It often stays wide for a while, then settles as Sydney and Tokyo quotes pick up.
The pattern looks like a sharp spike at the rollover, then a slow return to normal over maybe 30 to 60 minutes. Brokers differ a lot. Some show the widening for a few seconds, others for most of an hour.
A stop-loss on a long position triggers on the bid. If the spread blows out, the bid drops even though the mid price never moved, and the stop gets hit. That's behind a lot of "stop got hunted" complaints around this hour. Often it's just thin liquidity and a wider quote, nothing more sinister.
Anyone scalping a Sydney or Tokyo setup soon after should look at the real cost, not the quiet chart.
