Pip values change on cross pairs

On pairs quoted in dollars, like EURUSD, one pip on a standard lot is worth about ten dollars. On crosses and other pairs, the value depends on the quote currency and the exchange rate.
A pip on EURGBP is paid in pounds. A pip on USDJPY is paid in yen, and converts to dollars at the current rate. A trader using a fixed ten dollars per pip assumption on every pair gets the risk wrong.
The error compounds across a portfolio. A position on GBPJPY may carry a higher or lower dollar risk per pip than expected, and changes over time as exchange rates move.
Most platforms calculate this automatically, and position size calculators are available. The key is using them, and checking the risk in account currency before placing the trade.
A subtle trap involves accounts denominated in a currency other than the dollar, where the conversion adds another layer.
Is the dollar risk of each trade checked against the account currency before entering?
