Friday evening is where the thin liquidity lives
Most traders know Friday is quieter. Fewer know how fast the market thins once London closes.
From about 17:00 London time, the European desks pack up. New York is still open but its own pace falls as the weekend approaches. By 20:00 GMT, order books on the majors are noticeably thinner, and on crosses and minors the difference is dramatic.
In practice that means:
- Spreads creep up
- Small orders move price further than they would at noon
- False breakouts become more common, since there is nobody to defend a level
- Stop hunts feel more targeted because a few mid-size orders can reach clusters
Meanwhile the platform shows the same smooth candles and the same indicators. The market has changed character, and the indicators do not know.
A few scalpers do well in this window with strict fade strategies. Most do not, and a Friday evening with bad fills tends to erase a good week.
Why is the last two hours of Friday so tempting even though the pattern is well known?
