Too many indicators: the cluttered chart problem

A chart with five oscillators, three moving averages, two sets of bands and a trendline forest looks sophisticated. It also paralyses.

Indicators derived from the same price data mostly say the same thing in different ways. Stacking them adds the illusion of confirmation without adding information. Meanwhile, conflicting signals create hesitation, and the time lost deciding costs entries.

A cleaner approach is to start with price and add one thing at a time, keeping only what demonstrably improves results. Test each addition: with and without. If the numbers don't improve, it's decoration.

Many successful scalpers run charts with very little: price, a moving average or VWAP, key levels, and perhaps one volatility measure. The simplicity speeds reading and reduces second guessing.

A good exercise is to strip the chart to the bare minimum for a week and compare the journal with previous weeks.

What's on the chart right now that has never been tested for usefulness?
