Netting vs hedging accounts for scalpers

Two account types, two different realities.

Hedging: each trade is its own ticket. Buy 1 lot, buy another, sell a third, all of them sit side by side, each with its own stop and target. Easy to track and manage independently.

Netting: all trades in one instrument merge into a single position. Buy 1 lot then sell 0.5 lot, and the account shows a net long of 0.5 lot. Stops and targets apply to the whole position.

For a scalper who scales in and out, netting can be confusing. A new order might reduce or flip the position instead of adding to it, and a single stop covers everything. Hedging is more intuitive for layered entries, but also makes it dangerously easy to hold opposing positions and pay spread twice.

Some regulators restrict hedging, and some brokers only offer one type on certain platforms.

One practical test: open a demo account of each type and place the same sequence of trades. Buy 1 lot, buy 1 more, sell 1. Watch what the account shows. The difference becomes obvious within minutes, and no theory explains it as well as seeing it on screen.

Also worth checking is how each type treats stops and targets when positions get partially closed. Rules vary between platforms and nothing replaces reading the actual documentation.

Which style fits the way trades are managed? And has the account type ever caused an unexpected result?
