Picking a broker entity: regulation versus leverage

Last week a newer member asked me why I'm on an EU entity with 1:30 leverage when the same broker offers 1:500 offshore. Good question, so here's the reasoning in one place.
What I get from the EU entity
When would I choose offshore? Honestly, only if my strategy truly needed it, and then I'd keep the balance there small and withdraw profits regularly.
The question to ask isn't "how much leverage can I get", it's "how much leverage does my risk model actually use". For most scalpers I know, it's far less than they think.
What made you choose your entity?
What I get from the EU entity
- Negative balance protection by law.
- Segregated client funds and an investor compensation scheme.
- A complaint route through the regulator and the ombudsman.
- Clear marketing rules, so fewer "bonus" games.
- Leverage. 1:30 on majors, 1:20 on gold.
- Some products and account types.
- Speed of onboarding (more KYC).
