Negative balance protection: what it does and what it does not

Negative balance protection means that a retail client cannot lose more than the funds in the account. If a gap pushes the balance below zero, the broker absorbs the shortfall.

In some regions, the protection is required by regulation. Elsewhere, it is a feature that some brokers offer voluntarily, and the terms vary.

The details matter. Some brokers apply protection automatically. Others require a request after the fact. Some reserve the right to recover the debt in certain circumstances, such as trading that breaches the terms or is considered abusive.

It does not prevent the loss of the whole account. A sharp move can still take everything, and the protection only caps the loss at that amount.

For anyone trading with high leverage or around volatile events, reading the exact wording in the client agreement is a worthwhile twenty minutes.

Protection also does not replace risk management. The aim is to avoid ever needing it.

Has anyone seen negative balance protection applied in practice after a big gap, and how did the process go?
