A Setup Appears at Two in the Morning
Situation: your alert fires at 2 a.m. A valid setup is forming on a pair you trade. You are in bed, and you could open the platform on your phone.
Evaluate. What does your journal say about trades taken after short sleep? Suppose you tracked it: trades after fewer than six hours of sleep averaged minus 0.20R, and others averaged plus 0.30R. If the setup has the usual expectancy of plus 0.3R, a tired version has a gap of 0.5R.
Think about the next day. Waking at 2 a.m. and then trading for twenty minutes carries a cost for the following session, in focus and discipline.
Practical issues: a phone screen, drowsy order entry, and a higher chance of a wrong lot size. At 2 a.m., the chance of mistyping a size or direction is not zero.
Options. Skip the trade. Or set the order in advance with a limit entry and stop before going to sleep, so that no decision is needed. A pending order sized and placed at 9 p.m. executes without you, with a defined risk.
If the order is a conditional one, you still need to be sure that you would take the trade, and that spreads at that hour are acceptable. Asian-hour spreads on some pairs are wide.
Decision: pre-planned orders are acceptable if sized correctly and placed in a clear state of mind. Real-time discretionary trades at 2 a.m. are not.
Exercise: add hours slept to your journal, and compare results.
