Volatility-Matched Position Sizes Across Three Pairs
Account 10,000 dollars, risk 100 dollars per trade. The daily ATRs: EUR/USD 60 pips, GBP/USD 100 pips, GBP/JPY 150 pips. Each trade uses a stop of one ATR. Pip values per standard lot: 10 dollars, 10 dollars, and 6.67 dollars.
Compute each lot size. EUR/USD: stop 60 pips, risk per lot 600 dollars, lots 100 divided by 600, which is 0.167, rounded down to 0.16. GBP/USD: stop 100 pips, risk per lot 1,000 dollars, lots 0.10. GBP/JPY: stop 150 pips, risk per lot 150 times 6.67, about 1,000 dollars, lots 0.09995, rounded down to 0.09.
The pattern: the more volatile the pair, the smaller the position. EUR/USD gets 0.16 lots, GBP/USD gets 0.10, and GBP/JPY gets 0.09, and all three risk about 100 dollars.
Compare with equal lots. A trader using 0.16 lots on all three, with the same ATR-based stops, would risk 96 dollars on EUR/USD, 160 on GBP/USD, and 160 on GBP/JPY. The volatile pairs would carry nearly two-thirds more risk.
Another way to see it: the expected daily profit and loss of a position, measured by ATR, is roughly similar across the three, since lot size times ATR times pip value is about 96 to 100 dollars each.
This is the logic of volatility parity, and it keeps one jumpy pair from dominating your results.
Exercise: compute the lot sizes for your own watchlist at one ATR stops.
