FIX and API access for retail scalpers: worth the effort?

Some brokers offer API or FIX connectivity to retail clients, usually with minimum deposit or volume requirements. The pitch is faster execution, more control, and the ability to run custom software.

The benefits can be real. Direct connections bypass some of the overhead of a standard platform, which reduces latency. Programmatic access allows precise order management, custom risk checks, and rapid response to conditions.

The costs are also real. Development takes time and skill. Bugs can cause expensive mistakes quickly. Infrastructure, such as a stable server close to the broker, adds expense. And speed advantages vanish if the strategy itself has no edge.

For most retail scalpers, the platform is not the bottleneck. The strategy, the costs, and the discipline matter more. A faster connection to a poor strategy only loses money more quickly.

If the strategy has a proven edge that depends on speed, API access may be justified. Otherwise, a reliable platform on a stable VPS usually gets the job done.

Has anyone moved from a standard platform to API trading, and what did it actually change?
