Day-of-week effects: the quiet Monday and the restless Thursday

Some traders swear that certain days behave differently. Mondays are slow as the week builds. Wednesdays are dominated by midweek central bank news. Fridays fade before the weekend.

The data is mixed but not empty. For many pairs, Monday ranges tend to be a little smaller during the Asian and early European hours, then pick up in the US session. Thursday and Friday often see bigger moves because of key data, especially the US employment report on the first Friday of each month.

Seasonality adds another layer. Summer weeks tend to be quieter than the weeks around central bank meetings, and the period before holidays often shows reduced activity.

The useful exercise is to calculate the average daily range for each weekday on the pair being traded, over a decent sample like six months. If the numbers differ meaningfully, position sizing or trade frequency can adapt.
