Barrier levels and the sudden dash through a round number

Barrier options pay out or knock out when price touches a specific level. When many barriers cluster just beyond a round number, price can behave strangely near it.

Dealers who have sold such options may hedge by trading the underlying currency as price approaches the barrier. The result can be a sharp, fast move through the level, followed by a quick reversal if the barrier gets triggered and the hedging stops.

The practical sign is a spike that appears out of nowhere, no news, no volume change, just a burst to a level like 1.1000 and a retreat. Many traders call this a stop run, and sometimes it is. Sometimes it is the footprint of barrier flows.

Nobody can see the exact barriers, but rumours circulate in market commentary, and some brokers publish them with caveats.

For scalping, the main use is caution. A level that is rumoured to hold a large barrier may deserve wider stops or no trade at all.

Quick poll for the thread: have you ever seen a spike through a round number that looked exactly like barrier hedging, and how did you tell the difference?
