Tokyo lunch lull: the dead zone nobody plans around

Between roughly 11:30 and 12:30 Tokyo time, a lot of Asian desks step away. Volume thins, ranges compress, and the pairs that were moving in the early Asian session often go sideways or drift with no conviction.

For scalpers, this window has a split personality. Mean-reversion setups can look attractive because the price keeps bouncing inside a tight box. At the same time, spreads on yen crosses can widen slightly, and any brief burst from a headline moves price much further than the thin book would suggest.

A few things are worth watching. The range of the last thirty minutes compared to the range of the previous morning. How quickly the spread recovers after small spikes. Whether the range break ever sticks or just snaps back.

Many traders skip this period entirely and use it as a break, which is a perfectly valid choice, because a lack of edge is itself information.

A specific habit is to mark the lunch window on the chart in a different colour so it stands out. Trades taken inside it can then be filtered in the journal and compared with the rest of the Asian session.

How does your strategy perform in the Tokyo lunch window compared with the rest of the Asian session?
