Pending orders trigger on ask or bid depending on direction

A buy limit and a buy stop both trigger when the ask hits the level. A sell limit and a sell stop both trigger when the bid hits the level. That is the rule, and it creates a few annoying edge cases.
Place a buy stop at the high of a range, and the chart will show price breaking that level on the bid. The order may not trigger until the ask crosses, which could be half a pip later. Place a sell stop at the low of a range and the trigger happens exactly when the chart shows the break.
This asymmetry means breakout orders behave differently on each side. Long breakouts get a slightly later entry than short breakouts for the same visible level, and the difference gets bigger when spreads widen.
The simple adjustment is to place buy stops one spread below the visual level if a chart-based trigger is desired, or to accept the later fill as a built-in cost.
Stop-limit orders add another variation, since the trigger and the limit price can behave differently on each side. Testing each order type at the smallest size on a quiet pair reveals exactly where the platform triggers it.
Do you adjust pending order levels for spread, or just place them exactly where the chart shows the level?
