Measure How Fast You Can Switch to Backup

Scenario: your primary computer fails during a trade. You have a phone with the broker's app and a laptop with a web terminal. How quickly can you reach a working screen, and how much does a delay cost?

Run the drill. Start a timer. Close your main platform, pretend the computer is dead, and reach your account through the phone app. Stop the timer when you can see open positions and place an order. Record the time. Repeat with the web terminal on the laptop.

Suppose the phone takes 4 minutes because you forgot the password and need two-factor, and the laptop takes 2 minutes. Your target is under 3 minutes.

Estimate the cost of delay. A position of 0.50 lots earns or loses 5 dollars per pip. During quiet conditions, price may move 2 pips in 4 minutes, a 10-dollar swing. During news, 30 pips in 4 minutes would be 150 dollars. The delay matters mostly when you cannot place or adjust a stop, so server-side stops are your first line of defense.

Identify the friction points: forgotten passwords, expired sessions, two-factor codes on a device you do not have, or missing apps. Fix each, such as storing backup codes offline and keeping the phone app logged in.

Schedule it. Run the drill monthly and after any change in devices or accounts.

Record the times in your plan, with the target.

Exercise: run the drill today and write your two times.
