Position Planning Near a Level Where Authorities Have Warned

A currency pair, USD/JPY, has risen to 158.50. Japanese officials have repeatedly said they are watching moves closely and will take appropriate action against excessive volatility. In the past, interventions occurred near 160. You are considering a long with a 1.5 percent risk rule on a 10,000-dollar account.

Define the risk. Intervention can move the pair 400 to 500 pips in minutes. A stop at 157.50 might be filled at 154.00 or lower. Planned risk for a 100-pip stop: at 6.30 dollars per pip per lot (1,000 yen divided by 158.5), 150 dollars requires 150 divided by 630, 0.24 lots.

Now the gap risk. A 450-pip drop on 0.24 lots costs 450 times 1.51, which is about 680 dollars, 6.8 percent of the account, 4.5 times the planned risk.

What can you do? Reduce the size so that a 450-pip fall costs 150 dollars: 0.24 divided by 4.5, about 0.05 lots. That size is small relative to the original plan, so the trade may not be worth taking.

Alternatively, take profits before the zone, or skip. The upside from further gains is limited by the risk of a sudden reversal, so the payoff is asymmetric against you.

Also note that the intervention level is not known. It is an area of risk, not a line.

The exercise shows how event risk should reshape position size, not just the stop.

Try this: identify a pair near a level where policy action is possible, and compute the loss from a 400-pip gap at your usual size.
