Projecting the London Session From the Asian Range
The Asian session on GBP/USD produced a range between 1.2700 and 1.2730, 30 pips wide. You plan to trade a breakout at the London open with a buy stop and a sell stop outside the range.
Set the orders with a 3-pip buffer: buy stop at 1.2733, sell stop at 1.2697.
For the long, choose a stop at the middle of the range, 1.2715, risking 18 pips. A target equal to one range width, 30 pips, gives 1.2763. Ratio 30 divided by 18, which is 1.67.
For the short, the mirror: entry 1.2697, stop 1.2715, target 1.2667.
Probability matters. In a simple version of this strategy, many breakouts fail, and the win rate might be 40 to 45 percent. At a ratio of 1.67, the break-even win rate is 18 divided by 48, which is 37.5 percent. So a 42 percent win rate gives a small positive edge. A 35 percent rate loses.
Add filters. Skip days when the Asian range is under 15 pips or over 50. Skip days with a major data release in the first hour. Trade only in the direction of the daily trend.
Costs: GBP/USD spreads at the London open are usually tight, but they widen briefly around the open itself.
The test is simple: record the Asian range, the breakout direction, and the result over forty days.
Try this: collect the Asian range for twenty days and note how often the first breakout held.
