Building an audience ethically as a trader

Many traders build followings through videos, posts and communities. Audiences bring opportunities and temptations.

Ethical practice starts with honesty about results. Show losses and drawdowns, state account sizes and periods, separate live from demo, and avoid cherry-picked screenshots. Disclose commercial relationships, such as referral links, paid promotions and sponsored content.

Avoid promises. No guaranteed returns, no claims of easy income, no pressure tactics. Emphasise risk and the likelihood that most beginners lose money.

Be careful with personalised advice. Telling individual viewers what to buy or sell may breach financial regulations in some countries, which require licences for investment advice.

Consider the incentives. Revenue from affiliate commissions rewards getting followers to trade more, regardless of whether they profit. Revenue from education rewards promoting hope. Awareness of these conflicts helps in managing them.

A long-term reputation built on transparency, even if slower to grow, is more durable than one built on hype. Communities tend to find out sooner or later.

Content that ages well tends to focus on principles and processes, like risk management, journaling and execution analysis, not on specific calls. A video about how to measure slippage remains useful for years. A video about where EURUSD will go next week is obsolete in days.

What practices keep content honest, and which temptations are hardest to resist?
