Burnout signs in screen-based work

Trading is intense, solitary and unrelenting. Burnout creeps in, and it's easy to miss until performance suffers.

Typical signs include persistent exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix, growing cynicism about the market or the work, reduced sense of achievement, irritability, difficulty concentrating, loss of interest in things previously enjoyed, and a sense of dread before sessions.

In trading terms, burnout may appear as sloppy execution, skipping the journal, ignoring rules, or forcing trades from boredom. The edge hasn't vanished, but the person applying it has.

Responses start with rest. A real break, not just a day off with a phone full of charts. Reviewing the schedule for sustainability: session length, number of trading days per week, time away from screens. Reconnecting with activities outside markets.

If symptoms are severe or persistent, talking to a doctor or counsellor is sensible. Work-related exhaustion is a recognised health issue, and the market isn't worth sacrificing wellbeing.

A practical safeguard is the weekly rest rule: at least one full day with no charts, no news and no trading chat. Another is a quarterly review of workload and enjoyment, with an honest question about whether the current schedule is sustainable for another year.

It also helps to keep a few non-negotiables: a regular sleep window, a daily walk, meals away from the screen. They look small and they protect the one asset a trader can't replace.

What routines help prevent burnout, and what were the early warning signs?
