USDMXN: carry, headlines and sudden gaps

The Mexican peso offers a high yield and has long been a favourite of carry traders. That makes it behave in distinctive ways: smooth appreciation during calm periods, sharp falls when risk appetite collapses.

The pair is sensitive to US politics, trade policy, oil prices, and Mexican elections. Headline risk can produce gaps, especially over weekends.

Spreads on USDMXN are much wider than on majors, and the pip size differs, so moves look big but costs are high in relative terms. Swap is also significant: holding positions in one direction earns a hefty credit, and in the other pays a hefty charge, which can distort the economics of any position held overnight.

Liquidity is best during US hours. Asian hours are thin, and spikes are common.

For scalpers, it's a pair that rewards careful research and quick execution, but punishes complacency. Event calendars from both countries are essential.

Weekend risk deserves a special mention for this pair. A surprise election result, a tweet about trade policy, or a policy announcement from either government can move the peso several percent over a weekend. Holding positions through that kind of gap in a pair with a wide spread and sparse liquidity is a decision to make deliberately, with reduced size.

Some brokers raise margin requirements on MXN pairs ahead of known events, so a position that was comfortable on Thursday may be tight on Friday.
