From Chart Alert to Phone Ping: Designing a Webhook Pipeline

Many charting platforms can send an HTTP request whenever an alert condition fires, and that request can be relayed into a messaging app through a small receiving service. The idea sounds simple, yet the weak points sit in the details around the message rather than in the chart logic itself.

The payload deserves design before anything else. A useful message carries the symbol, the timeframe, the trigger name, the bar time and the price at the moment of firing, in a fixed structure that a receiver can parse without guessing. Free-form text invites silent parsing failures the first time a template is edited.

Delivery is not guaranteed to be instant or single. Platforms may retry after a timeout, which means the same alert can arrive twice, and a receiver that treats every message as new will duplicate notifications. Attaching a unique identifier and discarding repeats solves this. A timestamp comparison also lets the receiver flag messages that arrived minutes late, since a stale alert about a price level is often worse than none.

A shared secret in the payload, checked by the receiver, keeps strangers from posting fake alerts to the same address. Finally, a periodic test message confirms the whole chain still works, because a pipeline that fails quietly looks exactly like a quiet market.
