Time zone challenges for traders in Asia and Africa

Trading guides are usually written with New York and London in mind. For traders in Lagos, Nairobi, Mumbai or Manila, the market's rhythm lands differently.

A trader in West Africa sees the London open at about 7 or 8 AM and the New York overlap in the early afternoon, a very convenient schedule that fits well with normal waking hours. Traders in South or East Asia often face the New York session late at night, and the London open in the afternoon or evening.

Practical implications: choose a session that matches energy levels and obligations. Avoid sacrificing sleep, since fatigue costs more than missed trades. Consider the local news calendar too, since regional releases can matter for local currencies.

Daylight saving changes in the US and Europe shift market times relative to local clocks that don't change, which can disrupt a settled routine twice a year.

A written schedule showing session times in the local time zone, updated at each clock change, keeps everything straight.

Which session fits best in the local time zone, and how are clock changes handled?

From Hong Kong the timing is a mixed blessing. London opens at 15:00 or 16:00 local depending on the season, which is good for anyone with a job that ends early, but New York data at 20:30 or 21:30 local means the most active hour comes in the evening, and the US afternoon is after midnight.

What works for most of our team: Tokyo morning for USDJPY and AUD pairs, and the first two hours of London. We stop by 18:00 local unless there's a planned event. Trading the New York open after a full day of work usually produced the worst results in our logs, so the session choice also depends on how tired people are, not just on volatility.
