Hidden fees: inactivity, withdrawals and conversion

A broker's pricing page shows spread and commission. The fine print shows the rest.

Typical extras include inactivity fees after a few months without trading, withdrawal fees for certain methods, currency conversion markups on deposits and withdrawals, platform or data fees, and overnight financing beyond swap.

Individually, these seem minor. Added together over a year, they can cost more than the trading edge produces for a small account.

Reading the full fee schedule before depositing takes ten minutes. Comparing two or three brokers side by side shows differences that headline spreads never reveal.

It's also worth checking how fees are changed. Some brokers can alter terms with short notice, and a policy that looked fair on signup can shift later.

A quick scan of the terms and conditions for the words "fee", "charge", "inactivity" and "conversion" takes five minutes and has saved plenty of people a surprise. Some fees only appear after a dormant period of 90 days, long after the sign-up excitement has faded.

What unexpected fee has turned up on a statement, and how was it discovered?
