Router settings that quietly hurt trading latency

A default router setup treats all traffic equally. A video stream, a game download and a trading platform compete for bandwidth, and the platform can lose.

Quality of service settings let the router prioritize certain devices or applications. Giving the trading machine top priority keeps its packets moving even when someone else in the house starts a large download.

Other settings worth checking: firmware version, whether the router handles many devices well, the DNS servers in use, and whether any "smart" features like traffic scanning add delay.

If the router is old, replacing it may be the cheapest latency upgrade available.

A before-and-after ping test under load, with someone streaming video in the background, shows how much the changes help.

Worth knowing: some routers have a gaming mode or low-latency mode that applies these priorities with a single switch. It's not magic, but it sometimes helps, and it's a quick thing to try before buying new hardware.

Has router tuning made any measurable difference, and what settings had the biggest effect?
