Backing up platform profiles and templates

Picture the scenario: the VPS crashes, or the laptop dies, and two years of carefully tuned chart templates, indicator settings and profile layouts are gone. Rebuilding from memory takes hours and never comes out identical.
It takes thirty seconds to avoid. MetaTrader stores its data in a folder reachable from the File menu, under "Open Data Folder". Inside, the templates, profiles, indicators, scripts and expert advisors live in clearly named subfolders. Copy the whole thing to cloud storage or an external drive on a regular schedule.
Some traders automate it with a small script that zips the folder weekly. Others simply copy it after every significant change.
While at it, note the broker's server name and account login format, so a fresh installation connects quickly.
A tip worth passing on: after any backup, test the restore on a spare machine or a fresh folder once. A backup that has never been restored is a hope, not a plan. It takes ten minutes, and it exposes problems like missing files or version mismatches before the day they matter.
What gets backed up, how often, and has a restore ever actually been tested?
