Sunday Open Pricing and the Truth About Weekend Gaps

Forex trades around the clock on weekdays, but the market closes from Friday evening to Sunday evening New York time. News that arrives during that break, whether political developments, central bank comments or geopolitical events, cannot be traded until the market reopens, and the opening quote reflects the accumulated change.

Retail brokers handle the reopening differently. Some show a gap in the chart, others display the first available quote after a wide initial spread. Early Sunday prices can be indicative rather than firm, and execution during the first minutes may involve heavy slippage or rejected orders.

Many weekend gaps in major pairs are small and close during the following sessions, though that tendency is not a rule. Larger gaps tied to genuine surprises may not fill at all, and attempts to trade a presumed fill can run into sustained one-way movement.

For scalpers, the more practical concern is spread behavior. Spreads often remain elevated for a period after the reopening, and a clear direction may only emerge once Wellington and Sydney are fully active. Positions held across the weekend also face the risk of stops being filled well beyond their set level.
