Why the Wednesday Triple Swap Exists

Spot forex settles on a T+2 basis, meaning a trade opened today is delivered two business days later. Brokers avoid physical delivery by rolling open positions forward each day, and the swap charge or credit reflects the cost of moving the value date ahead by one business day.

Because settlement skips weekends, a position held through the Wednesday rollover moves its value date from Friday to the following Monday. That covers three calendar days of interest in a single rollover, so the swap posted on Wednesday is typically three times the normal daily figure. Rollovers on other weekdays carry only one day's worth.

Not every instrument follows this pattern. Pairs with different settlement conventions, such as USD/CAD, which settles T+1, may shift the triple day to another weekday. Some brokers also apply the multiplier to indices, metals or crypto CFDs on different days, so the contract specification is the authoritative source.

For scalpers, the practical point is simple. Trades closed before the rollover never see the multiplied charge, but anything held across it on triple day carries triple cost or benefit. Checking the platform's swap table for the correct day avoids unpleasant surprises on the statement.
