Daily Pivot Points From Yesterday's Numbers
Yesterday's EUR/USD session: high 1.1100, low 1.1000, close 1.1060. Compute the pivot and the first support and resistance.
The pivot is the average of high, low, and close: 1.1100 plus 1.1000 plus 1.1060 is 3.3160, divided by three, which is 1.10533.
First resistance is twice the pivot minus the low: 2 times 1.10533 is 2.21067, minus 1.1000 is 1.11067, so 1.1107.
First support is twice the pivot minus the high: 2.21067 minus 1.1100 is 1.10067, so 1.1007.
The map for today: support 1.1007, pivot 1.1053, resistance 1.1107. The distance from the pivot to each is about 54 pips, and from support to resistance is 100 pips, matching yesterday's range.
Interpretation. Price opening above the pivot has buyers in control relative to yesterday's average. A first test of R1 at 1.1107 comes 54 pips above. A trade long from the pivot with a stop 20 pips below at 1.1033 has a target 54 pips away, a ratio of 2.7, and spread eats a bit.
But pivots are only references. Because many traders compute the same levels, they sometimes cluster orders. They also fail often, especially in trending markets, where price slices through them.
Do not use them alone. Check whether the pivot overlaps with prior structure, such as a swing high or round number, which adds weight.
Exercise: calculate pivots for ten days and mark how many times price reacted within 5 pips of a level.
