The anatomy of a revenge trade, and how to interrupt it

A revenge trade has a recognizable pattern. You take a loss, feel a sense of unfairness, and within minutes you enter again without a valid setup, usually with larger size, trying to get your money back. The trade is not based on structure but on emotion. Learning to spot the early signs helps. For me, it starts with a tight feeling in the chest, a sudden urge to look at the chart, and a thought like, it must go up now. When I notice those, I stand up, leave the desk, and set a timer for fifteen minutes. During that time I write down what happened on the last trade, whether I followed my rules, and what the next valid setup would look like. Often the urge fades by the time the timer ends. I also have a rule that after any loss exceeding a certain size, I must wait at least thirty minutes before another entry. It is a mechanical barrier that does not rely on willpower in the moment. Awareness plus a physical break interrupts most of the damage.
