Moving the stop to breakeven too early

Breakeven feels safe, and many traders move the stop there as soon as price shows a small profit. The problem is that normal retracement often returns to the entry area before continuing, so you get stopped at zero and then watch the trade reach the target without you. This is not a rare event: in my own sample, a significant share of trades that were stopped at breakeven would have been winners if left alone. To handle this, I use structure rather than a fixed pip move. I move the stop only after price has broken a meaningful internal high, and then I place it below the new higher low rather than exactly at entry. That gives the trade room to breathe while still protecting capital. I also compare results of three management styles on my past trades: no adjustments, early breakeven, and structure based trailing. The structure based approach gave me the best mix of drawdown and average reward, though your numbers may differ. Without testing, breakeven becomes an emotional comfort rather than a rational decision.
