The dollar index as a bias cross check, with realistic expectations

Many traders add the dollar index to their charts to confirm direction on dollar pairs. It can be helpful because the index is heavily weighted toward the euro, so its structure often mirrors EURUSD closely. That means it adds less independent information than people assume for euro trades, but it may be more useful for pairs like USDCAD or USDCHF, where it provides a broader picture. I use it mostly on the daily and four hour charts to see whether the larger dollar trend is up, down, or sideways. If the index is sweeping a major high and rejecting while my pair is giving a long signal, the combination provides additional confluence. If the index is in a strong uptrend and I want to buy EURUSD on a minor lower timeframe setup, I either skip or reduce size. There are limits: the index is a derived instrument, it may have different trading hours, and it sometimes diverges briefly from the pair you trade. Treat it as background rather than a trigger.
