Five losses in a row: what to change, and what to leave alone

A losing streak triggers strong urges to modify the strategy, add a filter, or switch pairs. Most of the time, the correct response is to do nothing to the rules and instead check whether the streak is statistically unusual. If your win rate is forty percent, a streak of five losses will occur regularly over a few hundred trades, so it is not evidence the method is broken. What you can check is execution: did you follow the rules on each trade, were the stops placed correctly, were conditions similar to your backtest? If every trade followed the rules, keep trading, perhaps with reduced size until confidence returns. If some trades broke the rules, the problem is discipline rather than strategy. Fix that first. I also review the market context, because a regime change, such as a shift from trending to ranging, may reduce edge for a while. Decide in advance what number of losses or what drawdown triggers a pause. Having a predefined threshold removes the emotional decision and makes it easier to step back without feeling like you failed.
