Sweeps on GBPJPY versus EURUSD: volatility changes the playbook

The same pattern behaves differently on different pairs. EURUSD tends to move with moderate ranges and relatively tight spreads, so sweeps are often small, precise, and clean. GBPJPY has much larger candles, frequent spikes, and wide intraday swings, so a sweep can overshoot the level by far more than you expect. That means a stop placed with a EURUSD style buffer will often be hit on GBPJPY before the move develops. When trading a volatile pair, I widen my buffer relative to average true range, reduce position size, and expect more false starts. I also pay attention to session behavior. The Japanese yen crosses can move sharply at the Tokyo and London opens, and stop runs there are common. If you apply identical settings across all pairs, you will likely get inconsistent results. I recommend measuring the typical overshoot of a sweep on your chosen pair, for example the average distance beyond the level before reversal, and using that data to define your stop and buffer rules instead of guessing.

The GBPJPY overshoot is real. I would add that it varies a lot by session. In the Tokyo session GBPJPY can be relatively calm, then spike at the London open. A buffer that works in Tokyo is often too tight an hour later. Using ATR from the same hour over the past few weeks, rather than the overall ATR, gives a better buffer for each session.
