Bracket orders: does your broker support them?

A bracket order sends an entry with a stop loss and take profit attached in one go. On some platforms it's standard. On others, the stop and target are only added after the entry fills, leaving a gap of a second or two where the position has no protection.

Why it matters for scalpers:
- During fast markets, those seconds can be costly.
- If the connection drops right after entry, there may be no stop on the server.
- Manual entry of stops after fills is slow and error-prone.

What to check with your broker:
1. Can SL and TP be attached to market orders and pending orders at submission?
2. Are they stored server-side or client-side? Client-side stops only work if the platform is running.
3. Are OCO (one-cancels-other) orders supported?
4. Is there a minimum distance for SL/TP from entry (stop level)?

MT4 and MT5 allow SL/TP on submission for most order types. cTrader supports advanced protection. Some web platforms are more limited.

What's your experience? Has your broker ever filled an entry without the attached stop?

The distinction between a single-packet bracket order and a two-step execution is absolutely critical for anyone executing on lower timeframes like the M15.

Platforms that require the client to wait for a filled ticket ID before sending the stop loss expose the account to immense risk. If the connection drops during that one-second gap, the position is completely naked. Because 99% of my executions are done directly from a mobile phone, manual post-fill stop placement is completely unfeasible. The order ticket must have the SL and TP fully populated before hitting the market.

I use IC Markets exclusively for spot scalping because platforms like MT4, MT5, and cTrader process these bracket orders server-side. Once the execution is tapped on the phone, the entire package lives on the broker's server. If the mobile connection drops a millisecond later, the trade remains fully protected.

I have never had an order fill without the attached stop when using true server-side bracket orders. I have experienced slippage on the stop execution during extreme news volatility, but that is a liquidity constraint, not a platform failure. This exact scenario is why relying on a broker with strict zero-balance negative account protection serves as the final, mandatory safety net.

Always verify whether your chosen platform sends the entry and exits in a single API call or a sequential chain.

Core Verdict: cTrader natively processes advanced trade management—like trailing stops and automatic break-even—directly on the broker's server, whereas MT5 handles these strictly client-side.

Basic SL & TP: Both platforms hold standard bracket orders on the broker's server. If your mobile connection drops immediately after entry, the hard stop and target remain fully active to protect the position.

Trailing Stops: MT5 processes trailing stops inside the trading terminal. If you close the app or lose your connection, the trailing stop instantly freezes at its last location. cTrader upgraded its architecture to run trailing stops server-side, meaning the stop keeps following the price even if your phone is in your pocket.

Break-Even and Scaling Out: MT5 lacks a native GUI for automatically moving stops to break-even or splitting take-profits (e.g., closing 50% at TP1); executing this requires a custom Expert Advisor running continuously on a desktop VPS. cTrader includes native "Advanced Protection" rules directly in the order ticket that automatically move stops to break-even and scale out of positions, all hosted on the server.

Since you execute 99% of your scalps directly from your mobile phone, cTrader's server-side architecture allows you to set complex exit logic at entry without needing a desktop VPS to keep the management active.

And how do I configure cTrader's Advanced Protection to automatically move my stop to break-even and trail profits on my M15 scalps?

Since i manage 99% of your executions directly from your phone, i can configure Advanced Protection natively within the cTrader mobile app. This ensures your M15 scalps are managed server-side without needing a desktop setup to keep the logic running.

1.Open the Position or Order Ticket:

Mobile App.

Navigate to the 'Positions' tab and tap your active trade, then select 'Modify'. Alternatively, when opening a new trade, tap the 'Advanced' option under your Stop Loss/Take Profit toggles.

Verification: The expanded menu displays the 'Advanced Protection' options or shield icon.

2.Configure the Break-Even Trigger:

Risk Management.

Toggle on 'Move Stop Loss to Break-Even'. In the 'When trade is in profit' field, enter your desired M15 trigger distance (e.g., 10 pips).Verification: The trigger parameter is actively displayed under the break-even header.

3.Set the Commission Offset:

IC Markets Buffer.

In the 'Add to Break-Even' field, input 1 to 2 pips. Because you are trading on an IC Markets raw spread account, this extra buffer ensures your stop covers the round-turn commission cost, resulting in a true net-zero exit.Verification: The input field correctly reflects the additional 1-2 pip buffer.

4.Enable the Trailing Stop:

Profit Protection.

Toggle 'Trailing Stop Loss' to on and set your trailing distance in pips. Tap 'Modify' (or 'Place Order') to push this entire logic package to the broker's server.Verification: A small shield icon appears next to your position in the main list, confirming the server is now actively managing your exits.

If you want to avoid setting this up manually for every quick series of trades, you can log into cTrader Desktop once and configure your default "QuickTrade" settings to include these Advanced Protection rules. Once saved to your workspace profile, they will automatically apply to all 1-tap mobile executions going forward.
