Correlation spikes in a crisis: cutting simultaneous risk

In normal conditions, EURUSD and gold might be loosely correlated, USDJPY might move independently. In a crisis, correlations jump: everything moves together.

What happens during risk-off events:
- USD and JPY strengthen together.
- Gold may rise as a safe haven (or fall if dollar strength dominates).
- Equity indices fall sharply.
- Commodity currencies (AUD, NZD, CAD) weaken.

If you hold short AUDUSD, short NZDUSD and long USDJPY, they may look like three trades. In a crisis they're the same trade three times.

Practical rules:
- Cap simultaneous positions with the same USD direction.
- Reduce total exposure when VIX or similar measures spike.
- Treat correlated trades as one position for risk purposes.

A quick check: before opening a new position, ask, "If risk sentiment changes suddenly, will this move the same way as what I already have?"
