Hedging bans and multi-pair scalp books on prop accounts

Many prop firms prohibit hedging, but the definition varies. Some mean opposite positions in the same symbol. Others include correlated pairs, or positions across different accounts.
Where multi-pair scalpers can run into trouble:
- Long EURUSD and short GBPUSD at the same time: is that a hedge? Usually not by most definitions, but check.
- Long EURUSD and long USDCHF at the same time: these largely offset, and some firms might view the combination as hedging.
- Holding opposite positions in the same symbol on two accounts at the same firm: almost always prohibited.
- Opposite positions at two different firms: often prohibited by both firms' terms.
What to do:
- Read the exact hedging definition in the terms.
- If you trade several pairs, list the combinations you commonly hold at once and check them against the definition.
- If unclear, ask support in writing.
Even if allowed, offsetting positions often mean paying costs on both sides for little net exposure. It's worth asking whether the second trade adds anything.
Has a hedging rule ever affected how you build a multi-pair book?

Hi FXS, traders, scalpers, prop traders,
I personally do not prefer and do not trade trading challenges. Im from oldschool forex spot trading.
Navigating prop firm hedging rules fundamentally changes the architecture of a multi-pair trading book. It forces a shift from purely signal-driven trading to strict portfolio-level exposure management.
Firms restrict these practices primarily to protect their evaluation models and B-book revenue. If a trader buys a volatile asset on Account A and sells it on Account B (cross-account hedging), they guarantee one account passes the evaluation and one fails, effectively arbitraging the firm's challenge mechanics. To prevent this, risk desks use sophisticated backend monitoring—often sharing data through common dashboard providers or IP tracking—to flag matching timestamps and opposing lot sizes across the industry.

When building a multi-pair book under these constraints, several structural adjustments become mandatory:
Net-Exposure Netting
Instead of allowing a strategy to take independent positions across all pairs, the book must be managed via a central currency exposure limit. Taking the EURUSD and USDCHF example: because they are highly negatively correlated, going long on both creates a synthetic, double-fee neutral position on the USD. A compliant multi-pair system must calculate real-time net USD delta. If a new signal would flatten the overall USD exposure, the system must suppress the lower-conviction trade rather than execute it.

Capital Velocity and Cost Drag
Holding offsetting positions is mathematically inefficient. You pay the spread and commission twice, double your margin utilization, and incur swap fees on both sides, all to achieve near-zero directional exposure. A well-optimized book avoids this inherently by prioritizing capital velocity—cutting the underperforming leg rather than holding a hedge.
Asset Class Diversification
To bypass correlation-based hedging flags entirely, multi-pair books are often rebuilt to include uncorrelated asset classes. Instead of trading six USD-quoted FX pairs, a compliant book might trade two FX pairs, one equity index (like the US30 or DAX), and a commodity. This prevents accidental synthetic hedging while maintaining the desired frequency of trading opportunities.

Platform-Level Controls
Many algorithmic traders switch their accounts from "hedging" to "netting" mode if the platform (like cTrader or MetaTrader 5) supports it. In a netting account, executing a short order on a symbol you are already long on will simply close the existing position, making it technically impossible to violate the direct same-symbol hedging rule.

Building an automated net-exposure tracker requires shifting from pair-centric logic to a centralized currency matrix. Given your C# background and use of IC Markets, this engine is best deployed as a headless cBot or MetaTrader 5 EA running on a VPS, which monitors the account state and bridges the data to your mobile execution workflow.
1.Symbol Decomposition & Direction Mapping:
Break down every open position into its Base and Quote currencies. In C# or MQL5, parse the symbol string (e.g., EURUSD into EUR and USD) and map the trade direction to algebraic
vectors:
Long: +Base, -Quote
Short: -Base, +Quote

2.Volume Standardization (Nominal Delta):
Convert the raw lot sizes into nominal cash values and standardize them to your account currency (e.g., USD) using live tick data.
For a 1-lot EURUSD Long: +100,000 EUR, and -(100,000 × Current EURUSD Rate) USD.
For a 1-lot USDCHF Short: -100,000 USD, and +(100,000 × Current USDCHF Rate) CHF.

3.Real-Time Matrix Aggregation:
Recalculate on OnTrade() or OnPositionChanged().
Maintain a thread-safe Dictionary<string, double> (or an array in MQL5) to track the exposure state. Iterate through the platform's open Positions collection, summing the standardized Base and Quote deltas for every active pair. This produces a live, net-exposure matrix (e.g., USD: +$45,000, EUR: -$10,000, JPY: -$35,000).

4.The Validation & Alert Bridge:
Integrating with mobile execution.
For fully automated systems, this matrix acts as a pre-trade gatekeeper: the EA simulates a pending signal's impact and blocks the OrderSend if the resulting absolute USD exposure exceeds a hardcoded limit. Because you execute 99% of your trades manually via mobile, configure the VPS-hosted EA to act as a monitor. When your manual M15 scalps push the aggregate USD delta dangerously close to synthetic hedging limits, the EA triggers an HTTP request to a Telegram bot, sending a push notification to your phone.
To ensure accuracy, the tracker must also account for floating PnL, as a heavily profitable or drawn-down position shifts the real-time quote currency delta slightly compared to the opening nominal value.
