USDJPY tape read: a failed hold above the opening range

Typical sequence at the London open on USDJPY:

- 08:00–08:15 range forms: say 12 pips.
- 08:18: price breaks above the range high. Breakout traders enter.
- 08:20–08:25: price holds above the level for two or three candles, but the candles are small and overlapping.
- 08:27: a 1-minute candle closes back inside the range.
- 08:35: price is at the range low.

The tell was the hold. A strong breakout extends quickly. When price breaks out and then stalls just above the level, buyers are not following through.

Things to watch in the "hold" phase:
- Candle size: shrinking candles above the breakout level signal fading momentum.
- Wicks: long upper wicks show selling pressure.
- Related markets: if US yields are falling during the hold, the USDJPY breakout lacks support.
- Time: holds lasting more than five minutes without extension often fail.

Trading the failure: enter short on the close back inside the range, stop above the post-breakout high, target the range low.

Do you trade failed breakouts as a setup, or just avoid the breakout?
